How do you celebrate Christmas?
Welcome to our blog! We are a group of second grade students in Alabama, located in the southeastern corner of the United States. Our class is learning about Christmas celebrations around the world. We would like to hear how you celebrate Christmas or the winter holidays in your country. Read below about how we celebrate Christmas in the United States. Then add a comment to tell us how you celebrate in your country. Thanks for visiting!
Christmas in the United States of America
Because our country is made up of many different people from diverse cultures, our customs and traditions are quite varied. One of our most popular traditions is our belief in Santa Claus, or St. Nicholas. Children in our country hang stockings by the fireplace and hope to be visited by Santa, the “jolly old elf” as they sleep on Christmas Eve. Bright eyed boys and girls awaken early on Christmas morning and rush to the Christmas tree and to their stockings to see what Santa has left them.
Most Americans also attend church for Christmas. Some attend a Christmas Eve mass while others attend services on Christmas Day. We usually attend with family members, some of whom may have traveled a great distance to be together for the holiday. Following church services families may host a Christmas dinner. Dinner is usually roast turkey or ham with cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and plum pudding.
We also have a tradition of decorating our homes for the Christmas holidays. Most families have a Christmas tree decorated with tinsel, boughs, ribbons, candy canes, and maybe even popcorn. Wreaths of greenery may decorate our door. Brightly colored stockings hang by the fire place, and mistletoe hangs over the door.
